La Luz Trail Run Announcement
The La Luz Trail Run is ON!
2009 Lottery Results
I received authorization late in the afternoon on 5/15/09 from Forest Service to send out application forms for La Luz Trail Run.  I have a family function on 5/16/09 and will try and get the forms in the mail by 5/18/09.   I will be using a random number generator to sort all of the envelopes that were received - the first 400 will be sent entry forms and the rest will be the waiting list.   I received a total of 564 envelopes for the 400 slots.   Good Luck and be looking for your envelope in the mail.

LA LUZ 2009 TRAINING PROGRAM
The La Luz training is under way, and we are heading into the third run this Thursday.  This week we are heading up for a 75 minute run on Pino Trail, a nice, shady alternative to La Luz.  Plan to meet in the Elena Gallegos Open Space parking area, just to the right and up around the corner from the entry gate.  We have been getting onto the trails promptly at the 6:00 pm start time.

Also scheduled this week is a "bonus" training session on Saturday, June 6.  The planned route is up the King of the Hill trails from the Sandia Ski Basin.  I would like to have some idea of how many people are planning to go, so a carpool time and location can be set.  I would like to avoid the confusion we had at the first Saturday run, where one of our bravest runners actually ended up going alone and ran into a bear near the crest!  You can let me know Thursday, or e-mail or call, so arrangements can be announced.  ktollstabler@yahoo.com; 239-5869.

The initial program is listed below.  Weekend runs are in italics.

May 21 from stone gates just below Juan Tabo picnic ground Up road and onto La Luz Trail 60 min.

Sunday, May 24 Golden Eagle Trail from Sandia Ski Base, up and back as needed

May 28  La Luz trailhead, up trail and back 60 min.

June 4   Pino Trail from Elena Gallegos Picnic Area 75 min.

Saturday, June 6 Mule Deer/Falcon Ridge/Crest from Ski Base, up as neededAnd back (King of the Hill route)

June 11 La Luz trailhead, up and back 80 min.

June 18 Sandia Casino/Tramway/La Luz Road  90 min.

June 25 La Luz trailhead, up and back 105 min.

July 2 La Luz road and trail 105 min.

July 9 Embudito trailhead, to crest and back 120 min.

July 16   La Luz trailhead, up and back 120 min.

July 23   TBD

July 26 (Sun.)     Evening run, bbq following! Celebrate your hard work!

July 30 TBD          Fast, easy, feel confident and prepared!

As an additional resource, you may also find the club’s Monday evening trail runs to be helpful , and fun, in your training.  They are held every Monday, meeting at the east end of Indian School Rd. in the foothills, for a 1 – 1.5 hr. run.  Ed Heller is the coordinator.  252-2604 with any questions.

For even more experience, there are several really great trail races coming up in our area.  There is the World’s Toughest 10K on May 17; Run the Caldera (trail marathon or half-marathon) on June 13; and the Sandia Peak Challenge on July 11.  I encourage you to give any or all a try!

I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the La Luz training program.  Feel free to call me, Kathleen Stabler, at 239-5869, or by e-mail, ktollstabler@yahoo.com.
