La Cumbre “Burque Brew Tour” Handicap
5K
February 13, 2011
The wildly popular Burque Brew Tour made
its latest stop at
the La Cumbre Brewery and it was a perfect chance for us to once again
hold
this in conjunction with our February handicap, complete with brats,
burgers,
and, of course, beer! Having been run
out of town by Mr. Sunshine, Old Man Winter was nowhere to be found as
we
enjoyed one of those perfect mid-winter days that makes everyone glad
we live
where we do. It was perfect not only for
running, but also for grilling out and watching as 35 runners and
walkers
completed a mostly flat 5K course close to the brewery. Joining
us for this run were a few first time
handicappers who we hope to see at many future events, many handicap
veterans,
and a number of spectators who came just for the camaraderie – well,
and maybe
an excuse to have a midday beer, too.
Among the first time handicappers was John Carpenter who has spent
several years being a volunteer at such events while nursing various
injuries. This was his first post-injury run and we
expect to see him running again in March in a stylish green dress.
While we had many handicap veterans who
showed up to run, it was two newbies who were the handicap winners.
Traci Wolfe and Kim Cooper finished the race
together and got to duke it out over the two prizes for first place – a
Valentine’s monkey and a can of spam.
A big thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers
who
helped make this such a fun event – Kelley Garcia, Joaquin Garcia, Dave
Belinsky
(our wonderful grill master), Jane Thompson, Nick Juskewicz, Steve
Jett, David
Wilson, Alan Overmier, Nicole Buerger, Laura Biedermann, Ed Zanelli,
and Jean
Herbert. I apologize if I forgot to
mention anyone. We really couldn’t do
this without you!
As February comes to a close, we shift our focus to
March
and the next race in our handicap series – the famous Green Dress Run. This hilly, 4.1 mile race will be held on
Saturday, March 19 at 8:30am at the East end of Indian School. For those of you competing for the free
shoes, this will be a perfect race to pick up a lot of points. It will also be a perfect race for people
watching. So grab your cameras and your
green dresses and join us on March 19.
