What do you get when you combine unpredictable weather elements and a potluck feast fit for a king?  It must be none other than Kathy Kirsling’s annual “Berta” handicap.   Each year that Kathy has hosted this April handicap run, the weather has been a wildcard.  One year we had snow and this year there were 20 mph wind gusts.  Yet we still had 23 people show up to run and/or walk this challenging course in Edgewood.  Kathy outdid herself by cooking up several wonderful dishes for the after-run potluck, plus she gave out some great prizes.  Among those who showed up to run was local author, Bob Julyan, who was kind enough to autograph one of the prizes – a copy of his book!

The winner of the handicap was Donna Calles who walked the course with her cousin, Steve.   She and Steve narrowly edged out Jean Herbert and Colleen Burns for the first place finish.  Jean and Colleen were in a race of their own for fastest female which Jean won by 1 second.  As for fastest male, that honor went to Wayne Chick who was fresh off an amazing run at the Carlsbad 5000 the previous weekend.  Other prizes were awarded to Steve Park for coming from out-of-state (Florida), Colleen Chick for finishing right in the middle, and Ed Zanelli/Peter Falk for finishing last (after adding some additional distance to the course).

Speaking of prizes, we’re coming down to the last handicap of the 6-month series in June.  Due to club-sponsored races almost every weekend in May, we are not hosting a handicap that month.  So anyone in the running for the shoes should be sure to be there on Saturday, June 25 at 8:30am.  Donna Calles will be hosting the annual Pat Ryan Memorial Handicap at her house on the west side.  It is likely to be hot for this 5k run but you can cool off afterwards in Donna’s pool, so bring a towel and a dish to share for the pool party.  Don Porter and Steve Park are the frontrunners for the shoes right now so come out and see who wins.  See you there!
