It never fails.  The harder the course, the longer the course, the further the drive, the worse the weather, the more runners show up for the handicap!  Kathy Kirsling's handicap in Edgewood was no exception.  It was near blizzard conditions coming through the pass and snowing heavily throughout most of the handicap.  The "gently" rolling hills were not called that by any of the runners, and it was one of the longer handicaps.  In spite of all that, 23 runners showed up plus several others.  Cynthia Edney won handily, but Mary Kirsling hung on to second place narrowly edging out Dave Edney.  Lon Waters was the fastest male, and Colleen Burns, despite distress about the length of the course, was easliy the fastest female.  Kathy Kirsling received 5 points for hosting the handicap, and so maintains her cumulative point lead with 49 points, but John Farrow is a measly two points behind with four other runners still easily within reach of that free pair of shoes that goes to the series points leader in June. 
 
Robert from the Albuquerque Journal arrived shortly before Mary Kirsling started and got some good shots of Mary and several other runners starting off in the middle of the snowstorm.  So watch for ARR Club photos in the Journal!  Robert had thought the race would probably be canceled, but since when do runners ever cancel a race?  After the race everyone gathered in Kathy's house for a wonderful feast including many dishes made by Kathy plus hot coffee and tea.  Kathy also bought many prizes in addition to the three gift cards for Athlete's Edge that Marcel picked up for the handicap.  We learned that the elevation at Kathy's house is 6930', and there are 12 speed limit changes from Tramway to her house taking old Rt. 66.  The couple moving here from Indiana, Laura and Eric Biedermann, was awarded the two entries to Colleen's Bean Run in Moriarty the second Saturday in October - always a fun, small-town run. 
 
Starting in May, most of the summer handicaps will be on Thursday evenings, but there will be at least two exceptions that will be on Saturday mornings.  So keep an eye on the newsletter, website, and emails.  If you haven't done a handicap yet, I would strongly urge you to pick at least one a year, and make it a point to attend.  They are lots of fun and well worth it even if you can't make all of them.  Many thanks to Kathy for a wonderful handicap!!
