Pat Ryan Memorial Handicap
June 27, 2009
Donna's House on the Westside
The Pat Ryan Memorial Handicap had a much better weather this year than last. Last year a dark sky and blowing rain prevailed over the three runners who showed up. This year, though, bright sun and high humidity prevailed over a good crowd including: Tim's fiancee (Thao) visiting from Chicago, Shannon's dad (Timm) who claimed to be Shannon's little brother, and Shannon's brother (Keith) who did not claim to be Shannon's dad. Chuck Fuller is recovering from a pulled muscle so he and Jane ran part of the course, while Tim K. who is also recovering ran with Holly and came in right behind her.
This handicap was the last in this six-month series, so the battle for the free pair of shoes promised a good show. Kathy Kirsling was only 3 points ahead of John Farrow before this race, and both of them arrived bright and early with such quiet demeanor. You would never have guessed their motives. Kathy is still walking due to an injury, but agreed to a stiff handicap pace of 13:50, while John Farrow kept his usual handicap pace of 8:30. Kathy managed to edge out John by a mere 26 seconds. But that was enough to make her the series winner with 74 points over John's 70 points. It was quite a drop to the next one down the list with 46 points for the series. Kathy attended every handicap this series while John missed only January. My profuse apologies to Kathy and John for completely spacing out announcing the series winner! I also completely spaced out procuring the gift card for the free shoes, but I have it now and will get it to Kathy before the week is up. And this was after I noted that both of the top points leaders had come to the handicap! Please accept my profuse apologies!
Speaking of gift cards, thank you to Heart and Sole who donated 3 $20 gift cards and to Marcel Hesch who picked them up. Jennifer Jaramillo picked up one as the winner. The other two were drawing prizes and went to Laura and Wendy. Many thanks to Donna Calles for once again opening up her house and pool for the club. She also prepared several yummy dishes for the potluck. Be sure to congratulate Donna on graduating last week with her Bachelor's in Business Administration after many years of night and weekend classes while working full time and even a second job for part of that! That takes determination!
