5th
Annual
Pat Ryan Memorial Handicap
On Saturday, June 25th we
held the 5th
Annual Pat Ryan Memorial Handicap. Since
Pat’s unfortunate and untimely passing 6 years ago,
Donna Calles has graciously
opened up her home (and pool) every June to host this
run in Pat’s memory.
And, as always, Donna does a fabulous job of
making the most delicious breakfast items for the
post-race party. But
before we can get to the task of
devouring those wonderful homemade treats, we have to
get down to the business
of running – running in the heat and up a 12% grade
hill, no less.
The race course winds through neighborhood
streets, past a donkey and a few dogs, before turning up
the long, 12% grade
hill, the top of which is the turnaround point for the
3.5 mile run. And
it’s all downhill from there (well,
mostly). To
add to the fun of the event,
some 80+ degree temperatures are thrown into the mix.
Despite this, it was amazing to see
how good all of the
runners and walkers looked as they finished the course. None looked
too worse for the wear and some
even came across the line smiling.
Birthday girl, Patrice Leddy, was the handicap
winner. It
was a perfect way to begin what was
hopefully a wonderful birthday. She got
to celebrate by receiving a $10 gift certificate to
Athlete’s Edge. Steve
Park and Wendy Wiggins were random
drawing winners and each got a prize to take home as a
souvenir of their hard
fought battle with the elements and hills.
For those new to the handicap series,
every June and
December we award a pair of shoes to the person who
accumulates the most
handicap points during the previous 6-month period. Don Porter was
our winner this month and he
received a gift certificate to Athlete’s Edge for his
new shoes. Congratulations,
Don, on a great 6-month
series. We
start over again in July so
come out to the handicaps for your chance to earn points
and win!
Speaking of July, the handicap
coordinator is going on
vacation but the handicaps are not.
We’ve lined up a special event for July – a hash
run sponsored by our
friends from the Hash House Harriers.
Check the newsletter and website for more
information on this great
event. An
equal number of points will be
awarded to all who participate so come out and
experience some fun and get a
jump start on those shoes.
