November Handicap Race

The handicap series has
returned after a summer/fall
hiatus. For
those of you who may be
unaware, we decided to suspend the handicap series
during the months of May –
October because there seemed to be so many other
events going on during that
time. Now
we’re back and the 2011/2012
series kicked off with the popular Thanksgiving
4-miler hosted by Nicole and
Steve Buerger.
This handicap was held on
Saturday, November 12 and we couldn’t have asked
for a better day to run. Temperatures
started out cool with lots of
sunshine and warmed up just enough to make it very
pleasant for spectating, as
a few people did.
Handicap runners and
walkers started at Nicole and Steve’s house and
proceeded to quickly turn onto the
Linear Park trail.
From that point, the
race stays on trails, which feature mostly rolling
hills and few steeper
sections that make you appreciate the downhill
even more. The
fun, out-and-back course also gives you a
chance to watch your competition, both on the way
out and coming back.
Speaking of competition, we had
a good race for first place
with Nick Juskiewicz, who has recently done
several ultras, edging out Kevin
Witte by 14 seconds.
Close behind were
David Wilson, Maria Ladd, and Ian Maddieson
(another ultra runner!). Everyone
did a great job and survived the
mountain, err hill, that met us at the end of the
race. Our
reward – a wonderful potluck and some
awesome Thanksgiving-related prizes! A
special thanks to Wendy Wiggins for taking some
photographs of the race for our
ARR Convention promo video. Wendy
ran to
the halfway point, took pictures, and then ran
back so she was on double duty
for the event.
The next handicap will be held
on Saturday, December 3 at
8:30am at Academy Hills Park (near the
intersection of Juan Tabo and
Eubank). This
will be a two-person relay
but don’t worry if you don’t have a partner.
We’ll match you up with someone the day of
the event. There
will be a potluck afterwards at the
Zanelli house.
