Albuquerque Road Runners Membership Meeting
April 2, 2008

Call to order at 7:10 PM by President M. Hesch.
Race results sheet passed around.
M. Hesch thanked Whole Foods for allowing us to use their community room.
M. Hesch introduced Otto Appenzeller, PhD who discussed his new research into the aging process in runners and asked for 12 volunteers for a research study.

Events in the running community included:
- Terie Weidemann is featured in the May edition of Running Times.
- Roxie Miller and John Carpenter were married on March 29! Congratulations!
- Nicole Buerger will be our new NM State Representative to the RRCA.
Marcel thanked Glenda Muirhead and Linda Patterson for manning health fair booth and representing the ARR. They will do a 1 mile fun walk during the Charter Mortgage health fair.
It was announced that the dates for the Rancho Viejo Runs (5K, 10K in Santa Fe) were incorrect. Marcel does not know the actual date as yet. Stay tuned.
March Events - Recap
- 3/8 – Club Handicap Run was changed from Green Dress Run to a Poker Run and was enjoyed by all
- 3/16 – Shamrock Shuffle- Kathy, Mary and Shannon did this race. It was stated the the course was not well-marked and the 5K leader was misdirected.
- 3/30 – A. Overmeir spoke about the Bataan Memorial Death March. Several members ran in the race including Martha Lathe who ran and amazing 3 ½ hours! Tim Koehler ran 3:40. The race started an hour late for some reason and there were over 4,000 participants this year. A record field.
Other Upcoming Events
- 4/5 – Carlsbad 5K –Some local runners will be doing to Carlsbad including Mary Kirsling, Susan Mickez, Henry Rono and Bob Pratt
- 4/6 – Forever Young Run in Placitas – A. Overmeir announced that a sponsorship for the event was received from Diamond Trail Ranch, the area that the race’s honoree, Charlie Young, lived. They have also offered the area as a potential future race site.
- Justine Fox-Young is purchasing 125 burritos out her own pocket for post-race meal
- Cars will be allowed to park on highway removing the need to park at Homestead Village and walking to the start
- There are currently over 75 entrants
- Male AG of 50-59 most popular
- Free entry to those over 70 yrs.
- 4/21 – Boston Marathon – several members are planning to run
- 4/19 – Unser 20K will be held in ABQ and begin/end at the Museum
Other
- Women in Training will begin May 3 and run through July 13. The Women’s Distance Run will be held on July 13. Volunteers needed for coaching.
- ARRs Los Tortugas relay team will again make the trip to the River to River Relay. Members include: Kathy Kirsling, Larry Ruggles, Jane Thompson, CeCe Niemczyk, George Wist, and Dennis Muirhead

5/3-Shiprock Marathon, Race for the Zoo; Women in Training Begins; 5/4 Cinco de Mayo 5K and 10K in Pueblo, CO; 5/7- next ARR meeting; 5/10- Sprint Tri in Ruidoso;5/11- Jay Benson Tri and Mother’s Day; 5/18- Run Fit Run, SF Century (Bike) World’s Toughest 10K, Armed Forces Day Run (all local); 5/25- Adopted Trail Cleanup; 5/26- Boulder Boulder; 6/8- Taos Marathon
Guest Speakers: Steve Pino, from Athlete’s Edge and Cathy Brock, from the Unser Racing Museum were introduced. The Unser Racing Museum is open daily 10-4 and rents out the facility to groups up to 250.
