President's Corner

May is the month when there are so many races around here that you can fill each weekend with a local or nearby running event and sometimes two. Furthermore, if you want to do a race sometime other than the weekend you can run the handicap smack-dab in the middle of the month on Thursday evening.

The first Sunday of this month is when the Run for the Zoo, 10k, 5k and mile races are held.  Enjoy free admission to the zoo afterwards.

If you’re not available on that Sunday but have the day before free, you can travel to Las Cruces for a 5k or to Roswell for their Race for the Zoo which features a 10k, 5k, and 2 mile. If you prefer the distance of a marathon or want to do a relay-marathon, ½ marathon or 10k walk, you can go to Shiprock.

Remember the club meeting on Wednesday the 7th at Whole Foods on Academy and Wyoming.

The weekend of the 10th and 11th you can do two triathlons, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The one on Saturday (Corazon de la Montana) is in Ruidoso and the one on Mother’s Day (Jay Benson) is local.

Have you run at the UNM North Golf course? Have you run in a handicap race at the UNM North Golf Course? Have you run a race that was timed by John and Roxie? Have you run in a race hosted by Robert Feuer? Well let me tell you all of these things individually make for a great race and on Thursday the 15th you can experience these collectively! If you want to experience this fine race all you have to do is show up before 6:30. Get the scoop on our web site and read about it in this newsletter.

Two days later you can do the Jemez races in Los Alamos with choices of a ½ marathon, 50 kilometer or 50 miler. Then on Sunday you have another three choices; there’s the Armed Forces Day ½ marathon, 5k, and mile races as well as the World’s Toughest 10k that begins at an elevation of 4,900 feet and finishes at 6,500 feet and the Run Fit Run 10k and 5k distances as well as a 5k walk.
On the 24th you can stay local and do the World’s Most Wanted 5k Run and dog walk or go to Ft. Bayard to do a wilderness 2 mile, 8 mile run or a 5k walk. That might be a great way to start the Memorial Day weekend!

And after all this we still get one more Saturday this month, that is of course the 31st when you can go to Sunland Park to run in a race of which the proceeds go towards promoting awareness of services offered to families in crisis. These are more races than I can shake a stick at!! But then I don’t want to shake any sticks at any races, I just wanna put on my shoes and do a few of ‘em.

Until next month,

Marcel
